Ingredients needed for air fryer sweet potato chips
You only need 3 simple ingredients to make air fryer sweet potato chips. How easy is that? I also recommend you have a mandolin slicer handy to cut the potatoes into chips.
Here is what you will need:
- Sweet potatoes – 3 medium sweet potatoes that are all similar in size and shape. You want to select potatoes that are not too wide and are even all around since you will be slicing them into chips.
- Avocado oil – I like to use avocado oil but extra virgin olive oil also works.
- Salt and pepper – or just salt if you prefer.
How to make sweet potato chips in the air fryer
See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and more detailed recipe instructions.
- Prepare the potatoes – scrub the sweet potatoes, then use a mandolin slicer, vegetable peeler, or a sharp kitchen knife to slice the potatoes into ⅛ inch-thick slices.
- Season the potatoes – place the sliced sweet potatoes into a bowl, drizzle with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper and toss to coat.
- Air fry – preheat the air fryer to 360 degrees F. Place the sweet potato chips into the air fryer in a single layer with almost no overlapping. Cook for 5-8 minutes, checking the potatoes every 2 minutes and removing any that are done. Then continue cooking the rest until they are done cooking.
- Serve – Place the sweet potato chips onto a clean paper towel to cool. They will crisp up quite a bit more as they cool for a few minutes. Then serve and enjoy!
Pro tip! Season the chips well but do not use too much oil or they may turn out soggy. I found that a little oil goes a long way. You could even use olive oil spray if you are watching your calories.
Tips for Success
- Use a mandolin slicer – this will help you get nice, even size chips that are ⅛ inch thick.
- Make sure the chips are not overlapping – place the chips in a single layer in the air fryer. Some slight overlapping is okay since they will shrink up as they cook but too much overlapping and some of them may turn out soggier than crispy.
- Check them while they cook – since some of the chips will cook faster than others, it is important to check them as they cook and remove any that may be done, then continue cooking the rest.
- Let them cool – the chips will crisp up a lot while they cool so let them cool for a few minutes on a paper towel once they are done cooking.
How to store homemade sweet potato chips
These sweet potato chips are best if eaten right away but you can store them if you prefer. To store these chips, let them cool then transfer them to a ziplock bag or container and keep them at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
Do I need to soak the sweet potatoes before I cook them?
For these air fryer sweet potato chips, I did not think it was necessary to soak them like you would need to do if you were using white potatoes. This is because sweet potatoes contain less starch and can get crispy without needing to soak them first.
Why are my sweet potato chips soggy?
There are two reasons these air fryer sweet potato chips could turn out soggy.
- You overfilled the air fryer basket with too much overlapping. It is important to lay the sweet potato slices in an even layer in the air fryer basket to allow them to get crispy on all sides. See the photos above for how I did it.
- They were too wet. Using wet potatoes as well as using too much oil can cause them to become soggy. Make sure you dry them well before coating them by laying them out on a clean paper towel and patting them dry before adding them to the mixing bowl. Then drizzle them in the oil.
Why did my air fryer sweet potato chips burn?
Because sweet potato slices can vary in size, some of the chips will cook faster than others. That is why it is important to check them every 2-3 minutes as they are cooking, remove any chips that are cooked and crispy, then continue cooking the rest until they are done.

Description
These air fryer sweet potato chips make the best healthy, crunchy snack! You can make them in under 30 minutes and they are much healthier than store-bought chips. This homemade version is easy to make and is a wonderful healthy snack that even kids love.
Ingredients
- 3 medium sweet potatoes – that are even all around.
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil or olive oil
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- Prepare the sweet potatoes. Scrub the sweet potatoes really well then dry them well with a clean towel. Use a mandolin slicer, vegetable peeler, or sharp kitchen knife to cut the potatoes into thin ⅛-inch thick slices, or chips.
- Season the potatoes. Place the sliced sweet potatoes into a medium bowl, drizzle them with oil, and season them with salt and pepper. Toss to coat them in the seasoning.
- Cook. Preheat the air fryer to 360 degrees F. Once it is ready, place the sweet potato chips into the air fryer basket in a single layer with very little overlapping. Cook for 5-8 minutes, check the chips every 2 minutes. Remove any that are done, then continue cooking the rest. Place the chips onto a clean paper towel to cool for a few minutes. They will continue to crisp up as they cool.
- Serve. Enjoy these sweet potato chips with some ketchup or your favorite chip dip!
Notes
- Try to use medium-large sweet potatoes that are even in size all around. There are still going to be some slices that are different sizes but selecting a sweet potato that you know you will be cutting into even-size slices that is rounder rather than longer is best.
- Use a mandolin slicer to cut the potatoes. I tried cutting the potatoes into slices with a sharp kitchen knife as well as a mandolin and the mandolin was not only easier but resulted in thinner, even slices. Plus, it was much faster.
- Do not over crowd the air fryer basket. Make sure you lay the sweet potato in an even layer in the air fryer basket to ensure they cook evenly and get nice and crispy all around.
- Storing these sweet potato chips. You can store these chips in a ziplock bag or container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks!
