What Are Deviled Eggs With Relish?
This recipe is a fun twist on classic deviled eggs, with pickle relish added to the filling for a hint of tang and sweetness.
What Is The Best Way To Add The Filling To Deviled Eggs?
Using a small dessert spoon or baby spoon to scoop the filling into the cooked egg whites easily is the best method. You can also fill a small ziplock bag with the filling, snip off the end, and pipe the filling into the individual eggs. Alternatively, use a piping bag fitted with a flower tip for a fancier deviled egg look.
Try these easy-to-peel hard-boiled eggs for a foolproof method for making hard-boiled eggs to use in this deviled egg recipe.
Ingredients Needed
- Eggs – 6-12 hard-boiled eggs (6 eggs makes 12 deviled eggs and 12 eggs will make 24). I recommend using large eggs so you have more area for the filling.
- Mayo – I used avocado mayo but any type of mayo will work in this recipe.
- Dijon mustard – for added tang and flavor.
- Pickel relish – you can use sweet pickel relish or unsweetened.
- Salt and pepper – used to enhance all of the other flavors.
See the recipe card located at the bottom of this post for the complete list of recipe ingredients, instructions, and nutrition.

How To Make Deviled Eggs With Relish
Here is a summary, with step-by-step photos of how to make these amazing deviled eggs.
Cook the eggs and allow them to cool. (you can do this a few days in advance). Peel the hard-boiled eggs, slice each one in half, lengthwise, and scoop out the yolks. Place the cooked yellow yolks into a medium bowl.
Mash the cooked yolks using a fork or potato masher.
Add the rest of the filling ingredients (mayo, mustard, relish, salt, and pepper) and mix well to combine. Alternatively, you can also pulse the filling in a food processor or blender for a smoother filling. We like ours a little chunkier and more rustic looking.
Use a small spoon (like a tablespoon, dessert spoon, or baby spoon) to divide the filling between the cleaned-out, cooked egg whites. Serve and enjoy!
Pro tip: When the cooked eggs are cooled, the egg yolks separate more easily from the whites. If the eggs are still warm, the yolks tend to adhere to the whites, making it challenging to achieve clean, intact egg whites.
Expert Tips and Recommendations
- Steam the eggs – Steaming the eggs rather than cooking them in water results in unblemished perfectly cooked hard-boiled eggs where the shells slide right off. You can cook them this way by using your Instant Pot or Air fryer. See the recipe card for steps or in more detail in this post.
- Wipe Your Knife – When it’s time to cut your hard-boiled eggs in half, wipe your knife between slices. The egg yolk will likely get stuck to your knife as you cut the eggs so cleaning it in between cuts will allow the egg whites to remain clean and beautiful.
- Wait to Fill Them – It’s best to fill the eggs as close to serving as possible. If filled too early, the eggs will start to discolor and get watery. You can make the filling ahead of time, and store it separately from the whites. Wrap the peeled egg-white halves tightly with a double layer of plastic wrap and place the filling in a separate zipper-lock plastic bag (squeezing out all the air). Refrigerate until ready to fill and serve. Or see the make-ahead tip below.
Substitutions
Here are a few substitutions to make this recipe fit for any dietary needs.
- Mayo – to make this deviled eggs with relish recipe whole30 and paleo use avocado mayo, like the Primal Kitchen Brand.
- Eggs – if you cannot have eggs then you can use cooked, hollowed-out baby potatoes in place of the eggs for deviled potatoes.
- Vegetarian – this recipe, as written is already vegetarian and paleo if you use avocado mayo.
- Relish – Use chopped pickles in place of the relish.
Variations
Here are some delicious variations to these deviled eggs to impress your guests.
- Spicy – add a splash of hot sauce to the deviled egg filling for a spicy kick.
- Deluxe – top the deviled eggs with cooked, chopped bacon and chives.
- Protein-packed – add 1-2 tablespoons of cottage cheese to the filling for even more protein.
Make ahead
You can make deviled eggs up to one day in advance by placing the assembled eggs in an airtight container and storing them in the fridge. Just remove and serve right from the fridge when you are ready to enjoy them.
Ways To Serve Deviled Eggs
- With a Topping Bar – we love to offer a topping bar with options like crumbled bacon, chopped chives, diced radishes, shredded cheese, and sliced jalapeños, allowing guests to customize their deviled eggs.
- As part of a Brunch Spread – serve deviled eggs alongside other brunch favorites like smoked salmon, bagels, fruit salad, and pastries.
- On a Charcuterie Board – include them on a charcuterie board with various meats, cheeses, crackers, and fruits for a sophisticated appetizer option.
- As a snack – or simply enjoy them as a light, healthy snack all on their own.
Storage
Deviled eggs should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and eaten within 3 days.

- Total Time: 25 minutes
- Yield: 12 deviled eggs 1x
- Diet: Vegetarian
Description
These deviled eggs with relish make a delicious appetizer everyone will go crazy for! The filling is made with bright yellow cooked egg yolks, mayo, mustard, and pickled relish for a tasty twist on classic deviled eggs.
Ingredients
- 6 large eggs
- ¼ cup mayo
- 1 tablespoon pickled relish
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper – to taste
Instructions
- Hard boil the eggs – you can do this in the Instant Pot, air fryer, or on the stovetop. The Instant Pot is the best method. Just pour 1 cup of water into the Instant pot, place the metal trivet it came with in the bottom, and place the uncooked eggs on top of the trivet in an even layer. Secure the lid and cook the eggs in manual mode for 5 minutes, let the pressure naturally release for 5 minutes, remove the eggs, and place them into an ice bath for 5 minutes.
- Peel and slice the eggs – peel each egg by lightly tapping it on a hard surface, then the peel should slide right off. Roll the eggs in a bowl or dish of shallow water to make them easier to peel. Then use a clean knife to slice each egg in half, lengthwise. Use a small spoon to remove the cooked egg yolks and place them into a medium bowl. Place the cleaned-out, intact egg whites onto a platter.
- Mix up the filling – use a fork or potato masher to mash up the egg yolks then combine them with the rest of the ingredients (mayo, mustard, relish, salt, and pepper). The filling should be creamy and chunky. Blend the filling in the food processor if you prefer it to be smoother.
- Fill and serve the deviled eggs – use a dessert spoon or baby spoon to fill each egg with the filling. Make sure not to overfill them. Once all of the eggs are filled, serve and enjoy! Note: for fancier deviled eggs, add the filling to a small ziplock bag, snip off the tip of the bag, and pipe the filling into each egg.
Notes
- Use large or extra large eggs so you have a good amount of filling and area to fill the eggs.
- Cook the eggs 1-2 days in advance and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- Let the hard-boiled eggs cool beforehand since they will be easier to work with.
- Store assembled deviled eggs with relish in an airtight container in the refrigerator and eat within 3 days.
