Why Cook Hard Boiled Eggs In The Instant Pot?
- Quick – the eggs cook in about 15 minutes.
- Easy – all you need is an instant pot, water, and some eggs!
- Foolproof method – perfectly cooked hard boiled eggs every time!
- Customizable– make soft-boiled, medium boiled, or hard boiled eggs. See the cooking chart below for cooking recommendations.
- Easy peel – you will not believe how easily the shells peel right off these eggs!
Ingredients
- Eggs – 6-12 uncooked large eggs, I recommend using fresh eggs for the best results. Most store-bought eggs are only 24-72 hours old and will last 2-3 weeks in your refrigerator.
- Water – 1 cup of water to help the eggs steam while they cook.
- Ice – for the ice bath that helps to stop the cooking process.
Recommended Kitchen Tools
- Instant Pot – I used a 6-quart Instant Pot and was able to cook 12 eggs at once. Smaller Instant Pots will only be able to handle up to 6 eggs at one time. So you will need to cook them in batches.
- Bowl – to use for the ice bath. I used a large glass mixing bowl.
- Tongs – for easily removing the eggs from the instant pot.
How To Cook Hard Boiled Eggs In The Instant Pot
Here is a summary of the steps for cooking hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot. See the recipe card at the bottom of this post for the detailed recipe instructions and notes.
Pour 1 cup of water into the bottom of the instant pot and place the metal trivet that came with your instant pot in the bottom. Place the uncooked eggs in an even layer on top of the trivet.
Secure the lid and cook the eggs for 5 minutes. Per the recipe card below.
Once the pressure is fully released, remove the lid and then carefully remove the cooked eggs. Immediately place them into an ice bath for 5 minutes. This will help stop the cooking process. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!
Carefully and easily peel the eggs.
Serve and enjoy or cool and store to serve later. See storing tips below.
Expert Tips
- Use room temperature eggs – room temperature eggs are less likely to crack or split open and will cook more evenly. Quickly bring them to room temperature before you cook them by placing the eggs in a bowl of warm water, covered with a clean towel for 5 minutes.
- Utilize the 5-5-5 method – This popular method makes it easy to remember the cooking process. First, let the Instant Pot come to pressure (5 minutes), then cook the eggs (5 minutes), then let the pressure naturally release for another 5 minutes. This method is ideal for hard-boiled eggs. See the chart below for other cooking time recommendations.
- Place the eggs onto a trivet or steamer basket – to prevent the eggs from cracking and to ensure even cooking, place them on the trivet your Instant Pot came with. This also protects the eggs from burning while they cook.
- Use fresh water every time – Start with fresh, cold water in the Instant Pot for each batch of eggs you cook. You only need about 1 cup of water, to create the steam that helps to cook the eggs.
- Use an ice bath – once the eggs are done cooking, immediately place them into an ice bath to stop the cooking process. Let them sit for 5 minutes in the ice water, then crack and easily peel them or dry and store the eggs for later use.

FAQs
This is an easy method for remembering how to cook hard boiled eggs perfectly in the Instant Pot. Let the pot come to pressure for 5 minutes, cook the eggs for 5 minutes, then let the pressure naturally release for 5 minutes.
The number of eggs you can fit in a single layer in your pot will determine how many eggs you can cook at once. You do not want them to be piled on top of one another. Most 6-quart Instant Pots can fit up to 12 large eggs at once.
You do not have to use the metal trivet but it is recommended since it prevents the eggs from burning or cracking as they cook.

Get perfectly cooked, easy peel hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot in 15 minutes. This foolproof method is geat for meal prep and is the easiest way to cook hard boiled eggs that you will ever try!
Ingredients
- 6–12 whole eggs
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup of ice – for the ice bath
Instructions
- Pour 1 cup of water into the bottom of your instant pot. Place a metal trivet in the bottom and place the eggs on top of the trivet in a single layer. I was able to fit 12 eggs at a time in my 6-quart Instant Pot.
- Secure the lid of the pot and set the vent to the “Sealing” position. Set the pot to cook for 5 minutes in manual mode. It will take 5 minutes for the pot to come to pressure first before you see it count down the 5 minutes of cooking time. While the eggs are cooking, pour some water and ice into a large bowl and set it aside.
- Let the Instant Pot naturally release the pressure for 5 minutes after the cooking time. Then carefully remove the eggs from the pot, I like to use tongs for this. Place the eggs immediately into the ice bath for 5 minutes.
- After 5 minutes, remove the eggs from the ice bath, easily peel them, and enjoy! Or dry them, let them cool and store them for later use.
Notes
- Use fresh eggs that are less than 1 week old for the best results.
- Store leftover unpeeled eggs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. Store peeled hard-boiled eggs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
