Ingredients and Substitutions
Air fryer apples are so easy to whip up with just 4 simple ingredients. Here is what you’ll need:
- Apples – I used naturally sweet gala apples but honeycrisp or pink lady apples would also work great! I wouldn’t use Granny Smith apples since they are more tart in flavor and sweet apples are best in this type of recipe.
- Maple syrup – just a little bit to help bring out the sweetness of the apples and the glaze. Honey or brown sugar will also work great!
- Butter – you can use any type of melted butter or even melted coconut oil in this recipe.
- Cinnamon – ground cinnamon brings out the warm, cozy flavors that make this apple recipe perfect for fall. You can also use apple pie spice for even more flavor.
- Salt – is used to enhance all of the other ingredients but is an optional ingredient.

Prepare the apples – peel and cut the apples into 1-1.5 inch cubes and add them to a medium bowl. Toss the apples with the melted butter, maple syrup and cinnamon to fully coat them.
Air fry – cook for 14-16 minutes, flipping them halfway through cooking and checking them every 3 minutes to ensure they don’t burn.
Toss in glaze – Once the apples are done, transfer them back to the bowl you coated them in, scrape the glaze from the bottom of the air fryer basket and toss to coat the apples in the glaze.
Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and enjoy!
Top tip: cut the apples in 1-1.5 inch cubes so they cook evenly. I found that cutting them into wedges resulted in the edges becoming crispy with the center more tender and not as soft.
Recipe Variations
- Make this recipe vegan – use vegan butter or coconut oil for a fully vegan air fryer apples recipe.
- Sugar free air fryer apples – use sugar free maple syrup.
- Dairy free – use dairy free butter.
Expert Tips For The Best Results
- Choose the right apples. You want crisp, sweet apples and not tart apples. I recommend using gala or honeycrisp apples. Pink lady apples work great as well.
- Cut the apples right before you coat and air fry them to prevent them from turning brown.
- Check them as they cook. Air fryers vary, so check the apples halfway through the cooking time and then every 3 minutes to ensure you get them the right texture that you like. Mine were perfect after 14 minutes since we like them more tender rather then mushy. They will also take less time to cook if you cut them into smaller cubes.
- Save the bowl you coated the apples in to toss them in the glaze after they cook. There will be a gooey, delicious glaze that forms in the bottom of the air fryer after they cook and it is so great to toss the warm fried apples in. It takes this recipe to a whole new level of deliciousness!
Ways To Serve Air Fryer Apples
We love these apples in a bowl with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or yogurt. They would also be great as a sweet side with pork chops, pork tenderloin or pork loin.
Frequenlty Asked Questions
While I haven’t tested them in the oven, I bet it would work fine. Prepare the apples as directed in this recipe, transfer them to an oven safe coated pan and bake them at 350°F until tender and carmelized, about 20-25 minutes.
Yes, you can easily double the recipe but you may need to cook the apples in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
Leftover air fried apples should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Easily reheat them in the microwave, air fryer or on the sotvetop until warmed through.
Peeling the apples is totally up to you. I found that the texture of the apples was better with them peeled but you can choose to peel them or not.
