Ingredients and Substitutions for Strawberry Oatmeal
You only need a few simple ingredients to make this incredible strawberries and cream oatmeal recipe. Here is what you’ll need:

- Oats – quick cooking oats work best in this recipe. I would avoid using old fashioned oats, or steel cut or instant oats since they will not work as well and take much longer to cook.
- Strawberries – I recommend using fresh strawberries in this recipe for the best flavor. You can use frozen strawberries but they tend to be less sweet and more tart. If using frozen strawberries then thaw them before adding them to the cooked oatmeal.
- Almond milk – I like using almond milk to keep this oatmeal recipe dairy free but you can use any milk you like.
- Strawberry jam – You can use any strawberry jam you have. It adds a nice burst of sweet strawberry flavor enhancing the berry taste from the strawberries.
- Maple Syrup – a little bit of real maple syrup brings a nice hint of sweetness that takes this oatmeal to a whole new level of deliciousness.
- Chia seeds – add some fiber and bulk to this oatmeal making it even more hearty and nutritious.
- Salt – just a pinch of salt is used to enhance the other flavors to balance everything out.
- Vanilla extract – just a splash of vanilla is used to tie everything together nicely and give this cooked oats recipe some nice warm notes that make it so comforting and yummy.

Expert Tips For The Best Oatmeal With Strawberries
- Use quick cooking oats. They are thinner than old fashioned oats, so they cook faster and give the oatmeal a creamier texture.
- Fresh strawberries are best. Fresh strawberries give this oatmeal the best strawberry shortcake flavor. Frozen strawberries work, but the flavor and texture are not as delicious.
- Make it dairy-free or regular. Use dairy-free milk and dairy-free yogurt or swap in regular milk and plain Greek yogurt if preferred.
- Switch up the fruit. Fresh blueberries, raspberries or blackberries are delicious in this oatmeal too.
- Storage tips. Store the cooled oatmeal in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat the oatmeal in the microwave or on the stovetop, then top and serve when ready to enjoy.
What type of oats are best for oatmeal?
Quick cooking oats are the best oats to use in this recipe because, well they cook faster than rolled oats or old fashioned oats. They cook faster because they are thinner and precooked before being packaged.
Make sure the package says “gluten free” if you need them to be gluten free since some oats are prepared in a facility that makes other products that contain gluten.
I am a huge fan of Bob’s Red Mill Quick Cooking Oats.
Should you use fresh or frozen strawberries?
I recommend using fresh strawberries for the sweetest flavor and best texture. While frozen strawberries can be used, they tend to be a bit more tart and less flavorful. Either way, this oatmeal will still be delicious! You can also freeze fresh strawberries ahead of time and thaw them overnight in the refrigerator before using. Enjoy!

Description
This quick and easy Strawberry Oatmeal recipe has the perfect balance of bright juicy strawberries mixed with delicious oats and cream. The tart + sweet combination of flavors gives you a satisfying breakfast everyone will love!
Ingredients
For the oatmeal
- 1 cup quick cooking oats
- 1 cup fresh sliced strawberries
- ¼ cup strawberry jam – I used store-bought
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup – plus more for topping
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¾ cup dairy-free milk – I used coconut milk
For the glazed strawberries
- ¼ cup strawberry jam – I used store-bought
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries
For topping
- Dairy-free plain yogurt – I like Two Good Coconut Greek Yogurt
- Chopped pecans
- Freeze-dried strawberries
Instructions
- Make the glazed strawberries. Heat ¼ cup of the strawberry jam in a microwave safe dish for 60 seconds in the microwave. Remove and stir in 1 tablespoons maple syrup. I like to use a whisk for this. Add the sliced strawberries and toss them in the jam and syrup mixture. So good!
- Cook the oatmeal. Add the oats, strawberries, remaining jam, maple syrup, chia seeds, vanilla and a pinch of salt to a pot on the stovetop. Pour in the milk, stir and cook on medium low heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring it while it cooks. Cook the oatmeal until it is the consistency you like.
- Top and serve. Separate the cooked oatmeal into bowls, top with some more sliced strawberries, chopped pecans, freeze-dried strawberries and a little coconut dairy-free yogurt. Add an extra drizzle of maple syrup for even more decadent flavor. Add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup for a sweeter finish.
Notes
- Use quick cooking oats. Quick cooking oats simply just cook faster, hence the name since they are precooked before being packaged up. This makes them thinner than old fashioned oats, so that is why they cook faster.
- Fresh strawberries must be used in this recipe. For the best results use fresh strawberries. Which are in season so that should be easy. I tried this recipe with frozen strawberries and it was not as flavourful and delicious. Trust me on this one!
- You can use dairy-free milk and yogurt or regular milk and plain Greek yogurt if you do not need to keep this recipe dairy-free.
- Switch up the fruit. Fresh raspberries, blueberries or blackberries add a fun and delicious twist to this simple oatmeal recipe.
- Storage tips. To store this oatmeal, let it cool completely and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. When ready to eat, just heat up the oatmeal in the microwave or on the stovetop, then top and serve.
