We love air fryer sweet potatoes like these air fryer sweet potato chips, sweet potato fries, sweet potato fritters, and now these amazing air fryer sweet potato cubes.

Roasting sweet potatoes in the air fryer is a great way to get a nice crispy exterior with a soft, tender inside that brings out the wonderful flavor of the sweet potatoes in much less time than it takes in the oven.

To make these air-fried sweet potatoes we peeled and chopped them, then seasoned them lightly with olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Finally, we air-fried the sweet potatoes for about 15 minutes until they were perfectly golden, tender, and delicious. This is an easy recipe that you will want to make again and again.

These roasted sweet potato cubes make a super quick and simple side dish that goes with so many things. Serve them with chicken or fish, or enjoy them in a Buddha bowl or as a delightful addition to a salad. We also love them as a healthy snack with some ketchup!

Ingredients And Substitutions For Air Fryer Sweet Potato Cubes

You can make these amazing air fryer sweet potato cubes with just a few simple ingredients. Here is what you need to make them.

Ingredients for sweet potato cubes in the air fryer with labels over each ingredient.
  • Sweet potatoes – 2-3 medium-sized sweet potatoes. You will need about 3.5 cups of peeled and cubed sweet potatoes. Make sure to use fresh and not frozen potatoes. For a shortcut, you can buy prepared, fresh-cut sweet potatoes at most grocery stores, although I felt that peeling and cutting them yourself was less expensive and yielded more flavorful potatoes.
  • Olive oil – extra virgin olive oil is used to help the seasoning stick to the potatoes as well as ensure they become golden and flavorful as they cook. To cut down on the calories, you could also use olive oil spray.
  • Seasoning – I used garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper since I like to keep it simple and this seasoning combination is so delicious with sweet potatoes. Some other seasoning options that are so good would be cajun seasoning or taco seasoning.

How To Make Sweet Potato Cubes In The Air Fryer

Here is a summary of the steps for how to make these incredible air-fried sweet potatoes.

Two peeled sweet potatoes on a black cutting board with the peels in front of them and a red peeler behind them.

Prep the sweet potatoes – wash and scrub the sweet potatoes and dry them well. Then peel them.

Peeled and cubed sweet potatoes on a black cutting board with some round cut sweet potatoes behind them on the board.

Then cut them into ½-¾ inch even size cubes. Note: the smaller you cut the sweet potatoes the faster they will cook and vice versa.

Season the sweet potatoes – place the peeled and cut potatoes into a medium bowl, drizzle them with olive oil and sprinkle them with paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Then toss to coat them all.

Seasoned cubed sweet potatoes in a black air fryer basket.

Air fry – preheat the air fryer to 400°F. If your air fryer does not have a preheat setting then heat the air fryer empty at 400°F for 2-3 minutes, before adding the sweet potato cubes. Place the sweet potatoes in the air fryer in an even layer, give the basket a good shake to even them out then air fry them for 12-15 minutes, until tender and golden.

Serve and enjoy – once the potatoes are done, let them rest for a few minutes, then serve warm and enjoy!

Expert Tip: if you let the potatoes rest in the air fryer after they cook, with the heat turned off then the residual heat will remove any excess moisture and allow the potatoes to crisp up even more.

Recipe Tips

  • Cut the sweet potatoes into even sizes – try to cut your sweet potatoes into uniform sizes for even cooking. You don’t want some to cook more or less than the others. A good size for them is to aim for ½-¾ inch cubes.
  • Season them well – a light coating of olive oil and seasoning not only enhances the natural flavor of the sweet potatoes but also helps the sweet potato cubes to become golden as they cook.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer – you want to place the potatoes in an even layer in the air fryer so they can get nice and golden and evenly cooked on all sides. If you have a smaller air fryer then you may need to cook them in batches.
  • Shake or turn halfway through – you want to shake the potatoes in the air fryer basket halfway through the cooking time, which will result in nice, crispy potatoes that taste like french fries. If you have a tray air fryer then just turn the tray around or flip the potatoes on the tray halfway through the cooking time.
  • Let them rest – once the potatoes are done cooking, let them rest for a few minutes in the air fryer with the heat off. This allows the residual heat to remove any extra moisture, which will help the sweet potatoes crisp up even more (as previously noted).

Serving suggestions

The natural sweetened and rich texture of these air fryer sweet potato cubes is incredibly versatile and can be incorporated into a variety of dishes. Here are a few suggestions for serving them:

  • On top of a salad – use them as a replacement for croutons.
  • In breakfast bowls – add the sweet potato cubes to a bowl of grains or scrambled eggs for a nutritious, filling meal to start your day!
  • As a taco filling – we love them in these sweet potato black bean tacos for a vegetarian, filling dish the whole family will love.

Storage And Reheating Tips

The best way to store leftovers is to let them cool completely, then transfer the potatoes to an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Easily reheat them in the air fryer at 350°F for 2-3 minutes or until warmed through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to peel the sweet potatoes?

You do not need to peel the sweet potatoes, this is entirely up to you. Some people prefer to peel them because of the texture of the skin. In some recipes peeled sweet potatoes might be preferred for a uniform skin-free appearance.

Do I need to soak the sweet potatoes before cooking them in the air fryer?

In this recipe it is not necessary to soak the sweet potatoes since we are cutting them into smaller cubes, which gets them nice and crispy.  Soaking them is usually preferred to remove some starch for extra crispy sweet potato fries.

How long does it take to cook sweet potato cubes in the air fryer?

The cooking time will depend on your air fryer and the size you cut your potatoes. As well as your preferred tastes and texture preferences. In this recipe, we found that anywhere between 14-17 minutes yielded beautiful, golden, flavorful sweet potatoes.

Description

These Air Fryer Sweet Potato Cubes are wonderfully seasoned, golden, and flavorful. The sweet potatoes cook perfectly in the air fryer in about 15 minutes and make an easy, heathy side dish that the whole family will love!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2–3 medium sweet potatoes – about 3.5 cups peeled and cubed sweet potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil – or olive oil cooking spray
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sweet potatoes – wash and dry the sweet potatoes, then use a vegetable peeler to peel them, discard the skin. Cut the potatoes into cylinders then into ½-3/4 inch even sized cubes.
  2. Season – place the cubed sweet potatoes into a medium size mixing bowl and drizzle them with olive oil. In a smaller bowl mix the paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper together and sprinkle the seasoning over the potatoes. Toss to coat them really well in the oil and seasoning.
  3. Air fry – preheat the air fryer to 400°F. If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat setting then set it to cook with an empty basket for 2-3 minutes before adding the sweet potatoes. Once it is preheated spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray and place the sweet potatoes into the air fryer basket in an even layer. Give the basket a shake to even them out then cook them for 14-17 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time. Note: Do this in batches if you are working with a smaller air fryer.
  4. Serve – once the potatoes are done cooking, let them rest in the air fryer with the heat off for 3-5 minutes. This will allow them to crisp up even more. Then serve them warm and enjoy!
