Ingredients For Christmas Tree Brownies

To make this easy Christmas brownies recipe, you only need a few simple ingredients. Here is what you’ll need:

Ingredients for Christmas Tree Brownies in bowls with labels over each ingredient.
  • Gluten-free all-purpose flour (with xanthan gum) – I used King Arthurs.
  • Baking powder – to help the brownie get nice and fluffy.
  • Salt – is used to enhance the flavor of the other ingredients.
  • Cocoa powder – unsweetened cocoa powder gives the brownies a deep chocolatey flavor.
  • Oil or butter – gives the brownies a fudgy taste and texture. You can use vegetable oil, avocado, olive oil, or melted butter.
  • Coconut sugar + maple syrup – to help add sweetness to the brownies.
  • Eggs – 2 large eggs
  • Frosting – We used this homemade buttercream frosting but tested this recipe with storebought frosting and both worked great. We suggest mixing in some green food coloring gel to get a nice green color.
  • Sprinkles – we used multi-colored sprinkles and star sprinkles to resemble Christmas trees but you can use any decorations you like. Get creative with it and have fun!

How To Make Christmas Tree Brownies

You are going to love these adorable Christmas brownies! They are easy to make and even more fun to decorate. Here is a summary of the step-by-step process for making this recipe. Get the complete list of recipe ingredients, instructions, and nutrition in the recipe card located at the bottom of this post.

Step 1: Mix up the wet and dry ingredients in separate bowls, then combine into a smooth brownie batter.

Step 2: Pour the batter into a prepared 9-inch cake pan or 8×8-inch pan.

Round baked brownies cut into triangles on top of white parchment paper with a large kitchen knife in front of it.

Step 3: Bake the brownies for 20-25 minutes, remove, let cool then cut into triangles by cutting the brownie in half then in half again and again to make Christmas trees.

Baked brownies cut into triangles with a couple frosted with green frosting like Christmas trees with sprinkles in bowls around them.

Step 4: Mix up the frosting (if not using store-bought), frost and decorate your brownies like a festive Christmas tree.

Pro Tip: Make sure to allow the brownies to cool before cutting them so they don’t fall apart.

Expert Tips For The Best Results

  • Make them in advance – If you’d like to make these Christmas brownies in advance, you can make the brownies, cut them, and store them in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months before you decorate and serve them. Just let them thaw before you frost them.
  • Bake the brownies in a round pan so they are easier to cut. You can also bake them in an 8×8 square pan and cut them but I thought that the round pan was easier.
  • Cut the brownies to any size you like. We made them bigger but you can cut them smaller and get 10-12 out of each batch.
  • Frosting – We used buttercream frosting that we dyed green with food coloring gel. You can also just buy white canned frosting from the grocery store and dye it green. Most stores sell dyed green frosting during the holidays, which is great!
  • Be creative – We kept the design simple but you can use whatever decorating elements you like. We used a piping bag with a fun tip but you can also just frost the brownies with a knife like frosting a cake. If you don’t have a piping bag, you can use a ziplock bag with one of the corners cut off to pipe the frosting.

Recipe Variations For Brownie Christmas Trees

  • Brownies – you can use this brownies recipe or buy a store-bought mix. We love King Arthur’s brand.
  • Frosting – You can just drizzle the brownies with melted green candy melts and skip the frosting altogether. Or you can drizzle them with melted white chocolate and add sprinkles to resemble the Little Debbie Christmas cakes that are so popular this time of year.
  • Sprinkles – we used simple multi-colored sprinkles to resemble Christmas Tree lights but you can use any you like. We also found cute star sprinkles we used for the tops of the brownies.
  • Candy canes or pretzels – you can add a tree trunk using candy canes or pretzel sticks for even cuter festive Christmas trees if you like.

Storage

Leftovers can easily be stored in a covered container and kept in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

FAQs For Making Christmas Brownies

Do I need to use gluten-free all-purpose flour?

No, if you do not need to keep this recipe gluten-free then you can use regular all-purpose flour. If you are using gluten-free flour, make sure it is a one-for-one flour with xanthan gum.

Is it better to cut the brownies after they have cooled?

Yes, you want to allow them to cool for at least 15 minutes before you cut them into triangles.

What is the best way to cut brownies into triangles?

I found that using the round cake pan made it easier to cut the brownies into triangle shapes. Then use a sharp kitchen knife to cut the brownies. You can also use a ruler if you want perfectly even-sized brownies.

Description

These adorable homemade Christmas tree brownies are the ultimate holiday treat! Made with fudgy brownies, decorated with green buttercream frosting and sprinkles to resemble Christmas trees. They are easy and fun to make and gluten-free!

Ingredients

Scale

For the brownies

  • ½ cup gluten-free all purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ⅓ cup neutral oil – like vegetable, avocado oil, olive oil or melted butter
  • ½ cup coconut sugar
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup chocolate chips – optional

For decorating the Christmas trees

  • Buttercream frosting or store-bought white frosting
  • Green gel food coloring – or buy pre-colored green frosting – see recipe notes
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

Make the brownies

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F, line a 9-inch round cake pan or 8×8 pan with parchment paper, and spray it with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients (flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt)in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Mix the wet ingredients (oil or butter, eggs, maple syrup, coconut sugar, vanilla) in a separate medium bowl.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients into a smooth brownie batter. Stir in the chocolate chips, if using.
  5. Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread it out in an even layer. Bake the brownies on the middle rack of the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until set and a toothpick inserted in the middle of the brownies comes out mostly clean with a few wet crumbs on it.
  6. Remove the brownies from the oven and allow them to cool in the pan for at least 15 minutes. Then run a butter knife around the edge of the pan and carefully invert the pan to remove the baked brownies. They should come right out.
  7. Use a sharp kitchen knife to cut the brownies into even-sized triangles.

Decorate The Brownies

  1. Mix up the frosting, frost each brownie with a knife or you can fill a piping bag with a star tip to pipe the frosting on the brownies. Then add your festive sprinkles.
  2. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  1. I recommend using a 9×9 round cake pan or an 8×8 baking pan to cook the brownies.
  2. You can use the homemade brownie recipe or a store-bought boxed brownie mix.
  3. Allow the brownies to cool before you cut them or they may fall apart a bit. The cooling time is essential.
  4. You can make and color your frosting or buy green frosting at most grocery stores during the holidays as a shortcut. We made buttercream frosting and colored it using green gel food coloring.
  5. Get creative and use any festive sprinkles or decorations for the Christmas trees.
  6. Store leftovers in a covered container in the fridge for up to 4 days
