Ingredients and Substitutions
You only need a few simple ingredients to make these amazing protein balls with Cadbury mini eggs. Here is what you’ll need:

- Oats – old fashioned rolled oats work best in this recipe but quick cooking oats will also work.
- Creamy peanut butter – natural creamy peanut butter where the only ingredients are peanuts and salt. Make sure that if it has oil that it is stirred really well or the energy bites will take longer to set. Almond butter, cashew butter or sunbutter can also be used.
- Maple syrup – pure maple syrup for a little sweetness. You could also use honey.
- Protein powder – I used Clean Simple Eats vanilla protein powder for added protein and sweetness. Any ‘good tasting” protein powder will work.
- Mini Cadbury Eggs – this is the key ingredient in these Cadbury egg protein balls. They give this recipe a fun Easter twist that is so delicious.

How to make mini Cadbury egg protein balls
Here is a summary of the steps for making these protein powder energy balls with step-by-step photos to guide you.

Step 1: Add the oats, peanut butter, protein powder, milk and maple syrup to a medium bowl.

Step 2: Mix well to combine into a chunky mixture then fold in the chopped mini Cadbury eggs.

Step 3: Use a small ice cream scoop and wet hands to roll the mixture into 18-20 protein balls.

Step 4: Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes then serve and enjoy!
Expert Tips
- Crush the Cadbury mini eggs into smaller pieces so they are easier to roll into protein balls. If the candy pieces are too big, it makes them hard to compress into balls.
- Use wet hands to roll the protein balls so they become smoother and easier to work with. You can also spray your hands with cooking spray.
- Adjust as needed – depending on the type of protein powder, peanut butter and oats you use the mixture may be too dry or too wet. Add more oats if it appears too wet and a bit more peanut butter if it looks too dry.
- Chill to firm up – chilling the protein balls for 30 minutes in the fridge will allow them to firm up nicely so they do not fall apart.
How To Store Mini Cadbury egg protein balls
- Refrigerator: Place into a container and keep in the fridge for up to a week.
- Freezer: Freeze on a baking pan for 30 minutes, transfer to a freezer safe bag or container and freeze for up to 1 month. Defrost overnight in the fridge or on the counter when ready to eat.
- Meal prep: great for a quick grab treat or lunchbox snack ready to go for the week!
